Oil tanker fire causes three injuries

KUCHING, Nov 26: Three workers were injured when an oil tanker caught fire near a steel factory at Demak Laut industrial area along Jalan Bako this morning.

The trio, identified as Mohamad Yazid Hasdat, 20; Hasdat, 48; and Awang Mat Awang Unus, 54, were cleaning the tanker when the incident occurred.

According to operations commander from Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), PgKB l Henderi Ardimansyah, a team of firemen from Petra Jaya and Tabuan Jaya fire stations were immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 8.46am.

Upon arrival, they found an empty oil tanker docked at the river bank and it was still on fire.

Six workers were doing welding and cleaning works at that time of the incident.

Firefighters had to use open water sources from the river and foam method to cool the tanker in order to stop the fire from spreading.

They successfully controlled the fire at 10.14am.

Initial investigation revealed that the fire had destroyed 25 percent of the tanker.— DayakDaily
