Oil spill causes massive vehicle pile-up in Sibu

Traffic jam due to the oil spill.

SIBU, March 28: A massive pile-up of vehicles happened from Bukit Lima roundabout to Jalan Aman roundabout here at about 9am yesterday caused by an oil spill.

The early morning downpour further compounded the situation.

Some 15 cars suffered minor damage after they skidded and ended at the lawn area of Jalan Wong King Hoe. But not before the drivers were scared out of their wits.

Three cars had also collided with each other as the drivers could not control their vehicles due to the slippery surface.

Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue (Bomba) chief Janggan Muling said his department received a distress call from a member of the public at about 9.02am concerning an oil slick at Jalan Wong King Hoe.

“When fire fighters arrived at the scene, the affected area was covered with oil. We believed that the oil was spilled from a lorry,” he said.

He said it was fortunate that no serious accident or loss of life had happened.

“Bomba together with Sibu Municipal Council cleaned up the oil using chemical dispersants and water spray until the road was safe for use,” he said.

The operation lasted more than one hour. — DayakDaily
