SIBU, July 21: Old habits dies hard as the action of some parents are causing traffic congestion at three schools undergoing a pilot project to overcome the rush hour jam.

This had prompted the initiator of the project, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, to appeal to these parents to cooperate with the authorities to ease traffic congestion after school lets out.

Chieng had in June, launched the congestion-free pilot project for SRK Sacred Heart English, SMK Sacred Heart and Catholic High School.

“After we had implemented the pilot programme involving three schools to curb traffic congestion in June we noticed that traffic had been flowing smoothly. But now the problem is back to square one as some parents refused to cooperate by stationing their car along the road while waiting for their children,” he said after presenting Minor Rural Project (MRP) funds to 25 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) here today.

He had also noted that some parents do not follow the instructions from People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) members stationed on site as traffic wardens.

“We cannot station traffic policemen all the time there. I don’t want the parents to have a habit that when the traffic policemen are there, they will behave themselves. They should instead understand the benefit and the reason why we have the traffic restriction zone in front of these schools in this programme,” he said.

In line with this, he said he would call for a meeting soon with all the related agencies to devise with a better strategy.

“There are rooms for improvement. So, we need to study our strategy. I will call for a meeting with the related agencies to see how best we could solve the congestion problem,” he assured.

In the meantime, he hoped that the parents will work together with the authorities to ensure that everyone can benefit from the pilot programme. — DayakDaily
