SIBU, June 29: The 12 stations under Zone 4 of the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received a total of 213 fire emergency calls from January to June 21 this year.

The number reflected a 12 per cent decrease compared to 271 calls received by the same fire and rescue stations during the corresponding period last year.

Head of Bomba Zone 4, Supt Janggan Muling said, the decrease in the number of calls was due to less bushfires.

“Out of the 213 calls, Sibu Central recorded the highest number of fire emergency calls at 69 calls, followed by Sungai Merah (38), Sarikei (28), Mukah (21), Sibu Jaya and Bintangor (11 each), Mukah 2 (10), Kapit and Tanjung Manis (8 each), Selangau (6), Song (2) and Kanowit (1).”

He said, based on the statistics concerning structural fires, the Sungai Merah station recorded the highest number with 10 cases followed by Sibu Central (9), Sarikei (5) and the remaining stations registering less than five cases in the period up to June 21.

“Most of the causes of structural fires involving residential houses in Zone 4 are classified as accidents (e.g. kitchen, short-circuit, etc.) as well as negligence. I would like to advise the public to be more vigilant or more proactive in practising fire prevention rather than incurring losses due to fire,” he advised.

Janggan revealed that structural or residential house fires have resulted in a total of three deaths and two injuries in fire incidents reported in the period up to this June in Zone 4. — DayakDaily
