KUCHING, Nov 1: With the completion of the Northern Coastal Highway (NCH), Limbang and Lawas will shine as new stars in the development landscape of northern Sarawak, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at the launch of the NCH project at the Limbang Recreational Compound today, which was livestreamed by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), he said the project will adopt modern technology such as the Highway Information Modelling (HIM) system, replacing outdated construction methods while ensuring environmental sustainability.
“Projects utilising modern methods depict that an area is developed. If we follow old methods, then it means we have not developed.
“Limbang has a lot of hills. Last time, we would have to ‘cut’ the hills. Now, we follow the contour and formation of the land—meaning we must make ‘bertiang’ (elevated road) so we won’t disturb or negatively affect the environment,” he said.
He said that with elevated roads, it will remain stable for a long time with no bumps or uneven surfaces.
“If we build a road directly over swampy ground, within five or six years it will start to sink and become uneven—people will get motion sickness just driving on it—no one would want to travel to Limbang that way,” he said.
Using new technology, he said, the supporting pillars are designed to be strong and able to withstand heavy loads under various ground conditions. At the same time, the design will also be visually pleasing.
“People today appreciate green surroundings, so we’re making sure not to disturb the natural environment.
“This road will prove Sarawak is on the right track, and Lawas and Limbang will become another star in Sarawak—particularly in northern Sarawak,” he said.
According to a press handout, with a total length of about 87.96km, the NCH includes carriageway upgrades, bridge construction, and improved roadside facilities such as rest stops and safety infrastructure.
The project will also enhance regional tourism potential by improving access to destinations across the Limbang–Lawas corridor.
A key initiative under the Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda), the NCH set to connect the districts of Limbang and Lawas more efficiently through Brunei Darussalam, creating safer and faster travel for residents and businesses alike.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan; Bukit Kota assemblyman Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail; Limbang MP Datuk Hasbi Habibollah; Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong; and Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Hall, and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi were among those present. — DayakDaily
