KUCHING, Nov 19: All companies operating in Sarawak, particularly in the oil and gas (O&G) sector, must obtain the necessary work permits for their non-Sarawakian employees.
In stating this, Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah highlighted that there are cases where individuals entered Sarawak on social passes and engaged in short-term work, such as inspections or consultations.
This, he said, will no longer be tolerated.
“These companies, if they want to come into Sarawak, whether it’s in the O&G companies, whether it’s in other forms of business, plantation, they have to comply with the local regulations.
“Their employees, if they are Sarawakians, they will not have to apply for a work permit. However, if they are West Malaysians, whether they are engineers or vocational, if they want to work in Sarawak, they must get the necessary work permits.
“We will be very strict. That right belong to us and we will enforce it accordingly,” he said during a press conference held at Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex here today.
He also said despite being a registered company, compliance with licensing requirements is crucial or else, they will not be allowed to operate in the State.
“Even if it is just for two to three days, you (employees) cannot use your social passes.
“Because the moment you use your social pass, we will charge you. You have to comply with the strict requirements.
“We are not making it difficult. But law has got to be observed, respected,” he added.
Earlier, Abdul Karim when presenting his ministerial winding-up speech, stated that Sarawak has absolute authority to deny the operation of any individual, entity, or company within its borders if they fail to adhere to the laws established by the Sarawak government.
He said any company or worker found violating Sarawak’s laws will face action, including the rejection or revocation of work permits. — DayakDaily
