KAPIT, Sept 29: Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim today has clarified that he was only being humane in upholding and fulfilling the promises made during the formation of Malaysia.

He said he is not taking a defensive approach to Sarawak’s demand on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) rights since he resumed office as the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

“Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi (Minister of Works) knows that the opposition leaders criticised me in Parliament with the assumption that I am scared of losing support and being threatened.

“However, I never receive any threats. Yes, I admit there were proposals, but they never scared me.

“In life, we learn about being humane, and we must fulfil our promises. This includes the promises made by our forefathers. We must implement the trust given to us so that they (forefathers) can rest in peace knowing that their decisions are correct and appropriate,” he said during a Leader with the Community event held at Kapit Civic Centre broadcast live by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) on social media today.

Anwar further said there is no denying that there is a challenge in terms of the Federal government’s ability to uphold the promises.

“Take the Pan Borneo Highway project as an example; although the cost was high, we proceeded to implement it, and Sarawak recorded a better delivery performance compared to Sabah.

“In the past 30 to 40 years ago, Sarawak was considered as a poor State. Now, it is recognised as a strong State with potential, especially in the energy industry in the Southeast Asian region,” he added.

Also present were the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg; Nanta; and former Kapit MP Tan Sri Datuk Amar Leonard Linggi Jugah. — DayakDaily
