KUCHING, Sept 13: A man in his late 50s lost RM570,000 after falling victim to a non-existent online investment scam in early June this year in Miri.

According to a statement, Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said that the victim, who is a businessman, came across an advertisement on Facebook on the ‘investment’ and contacted an unknown individual, who is the suspect.

The suspect offered the victim an investment scheme that promised lucrative returns in a short amount of time, known as ‘Chief Inv.’.

“Following that, the victim carried out several transactions amounting to RM570,000 to a bank account given by the suspect.

“He realised he was being cheated after failing to withdraw the promised profits, and the suspect continued to demand additional payments supposedly for the release of the returns.

“As of the time the report was lodged, the victim had not received any returns as promised,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of not less than one year and not more than 10 years, along with whipping and a fine upon conviction. — DayakDaily
