KUCHING, July 11: There are no plans to expand the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), says Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He noted that SCV has been the home of many events and festivals including the international Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) which saw the recently concluded edition last month reaching the maximum number of festivalgoers.
“However, if we expect the attendance of festivalgoers to reach up to 20,000 or 30,000 per night, they probably might not even enjoy it because they cannot even dance as they would bump shoulders with each other.
“Presently, it is just nice where people can be there to enjoy themselves and the air is clean.
“So far, I think we will maintain it (SCV) as it is,” he said when responding a reporter’s query at a press conference held at Baitulmakmur II building here today.
He also mentioned that the Sarawak government is looking at many other avenues outside of Kuching to host events especially those that can reflect the State’s natural beauty.
“For an example, I like how beautiful Borneo Highlands is. If we can have a festival up there, there is no need for air-conditioner units as it is already quite cold.
“Thus, let us plan for this and discuss among the industry players and then I will relay it to the government,” he added. — DayakDaily
