KUCHING, July 26: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders have been reminded to remain neutral in political developments in Peninsular Malaysia, with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stressing that party discipline must take precedence as Sarawak prepares for its next State election.
Speaking at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Special Convention for the Central Zone in Sibu today, he said GPS had long maintained a neutral stance on political developments in Peninsular Malaysia and that all leaders should adhere to the coalition’s position.
He said he had recently become aware of a leader from the coalition being actively involved in political developments in the peninsula, adding that such actions should be viewed through the lens of party discipline.
“GPS has already made our stance clear. We should not get involved there. We can support everyone. If they win, we shake hands with them. If they lose, we do not condemn them. We should remain neutral,” he said.
Without naming the individual concerned, Nanta maintained that no leader should depart from the coalition’s agreed position.
“I am looking at it from the perspective of discipline. From the very beginning, GPS has stated our stance,” he stressed.
More importantly, he said GPS’ priority was to safeguard Sarawak’s interests by working with whichever coalition formed the federal government.
“Whoever forms the federal government, GPS can work with, because our priority is the development agenda for Sarawak.
“We have always said we do not want to be drawn into peninsular political agendas. Our approach is to work with the federal government of the day for the benefit of Sarawak,” he added.
Meanwhile, he called on party members to remain united and avoid pursuing personal interests, declaring that “no one is above the party”.
“There is no room for division, no room for self-interest and no room for personal agendas.
“No one is above the party. Our only goal is to ensure that PBB remains the backbone of GPS and that the coalition secures a stronger mandate to continue Sarawak’s development agenda,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
