MIRI, Oct 31: A mother of 7 has gone from living on restaurant leftovers and making chicken bone soup to support her family, to having her own nasi lemak stall thanks to the aid of Miri MP Chiew Choon Man.

According to Chiew, the woman identified as Kak Wati is the breadwinner of her family and earns RM20 daily.

She has an OKU (person with special needs) husband and she would use his monthly Community Welfare Department assistance to pay their house rent of RM400.

Now, the rice supply at their home has run out since last week.

“Her husband is not well and she has to take care of her children, so she can’t go to work.

“To feed her family, she would go to the restaurant to ask for leftover chicken bones and returns home to make bone soup by just adding onions and a little salt.

“At night, she would go to the area behind Imperial Mall to ask for leftover food when the mall is closing. If she’s lucky, she would return home with meat for her children to eat,” he said in a Facebook post recently.

Chiew further said upon hearing Kak Wati’s story, he knew that he had to help her.

Upon knowing that Kak Wati knows how to make nasi lemak, Chiew brought her to buy two months’ worth of necessary supplies to make nasi lemak and cooking equipment such as a rice cooker and refrigerator, spending almost RM6,000 in total.

He had also handed over a separate cash assistance of RM2,000 for Kak Wati.

The next day, Kak Wati woke up at 5am and started preparing nasi lemak to sell.

“After several hours of opening her stall, Kak Wati’s nasi lemak sold out and she managed to make RM250! She told me that she never made this much money in a day.

“This is the Madani unity that we must maintain. It doesn’t matter if they are Iban, Chinese, Malay or any race, I will take care of everyone like my own family members. There is no one I will leave behind,” Chiew added.
