KUCHING, Sept 13: The Sarawak government will strengthen security at Bintulu’s oil and gas hub despite clarifying that there was no incident in the recent scare involving Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the matter stemmed from a threat message received by a PETRONAS LNG employee in Bintulu, not from any actual security breach.
He stressed that the Sarawak government must not take the matter lightly and should remain cautious whenever such messages arise.
“There was no incident, no incident at all. It was only a threat. Or maybe just like a hoax. But it is good that we remain vigilant.
“The government will enhance security in Bintulu, including with a naval base and a new army battalion. We are also strengthening the police presence to safeguard Bintulu because it is Malaysia’s industrial hub,” he told reporters after visiting the Tabuan Jaya Police Housing Complex here today.
He assured that the situation is under control and not dangerous, but noted that the government is working closely with police and security agencies to monitor developments.
“The issue is social media, whether it is true or not. It becomes very subjective. Some are slander, some are speculation, and so on. So even in such circumstances, we remain cautious,” he added.
Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dato Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail explained that the threatening phone messages prompted an immediate police report due to the critical nature of the matter.

He said police investigations later traced the number to Indonesia, and joint efforts are now underway between the PDRM and security agencies there, including the Indonesian National Police.
“Investigations are still ongoing, with cooperation between PDRM and security forces in that country,” he said, adding that all state contingents nationwide have been directed to step up security at premises involving PETRONAS. — DayakDaily
