KUCHING, Sept 4: No public infrastructure damage has been reported following the recent minor earthquakes in Segamat, Johor, and several other states, Federal Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed today.

He said the Ministry of Works (KKR), through its disaster operations room known as ‘BiGBen’, has been closely monitoring the tremors alongside relevant agencies, including the Meteorological Department.

“For now, we can confirm that no federal roads or public infrastructure under our supervision have been affected by the recent earthquakes. Everything remains safe and intact,” he told reporters at a press conference after officiating the Sarawak Facility Management Industry Seminar Engagement Day 2025 at a hotel here.

Nanta emphasised that while Malaysia is not typically prone to major earthquakes, the government cannot afford to take the risk lightly.

“We must never take for granted that these disasters will not happen here. The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) is very proactive in this regard, including sending missions abroad to learn about building facilities that may need to withstand seismic activity or even, in the future, nuclear-related energy facilities,” he said.

He assured that KKR and CIDB will continue to refine safety standards, building practices, and disaster preparedness to ensure that public infrastructure remains resilient in the face of natural disasters.

“The priority is to keep our infrastructure safe and sustainable, protecting both the public and our investments in development,” he said. — DayakDaily
