LUNDU, Feb 11: Opar has the potential to become a food basket besides being a prime tourism destination, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Opar chairman Councillor Niponi Undek.
He added that Opar being a constituency located within Lundu district would continue to be a prime area too for both agriculture and tourism industry because of its strategic location.
“We need to develop Lundu as a centre to produce cash crops such as vegetables and fruits as it has fertile soil. It is also suitable for livestock farming too,” Niponi told DayakDaily here today.
Additionally, as it is located near the coastline, Opar constituency too is ideal for eco-tourism industry.
“Opar is located next to Tanjung Datu constituency where we have plenty of beautiful beaches which could be developed into first class tourism destination,” he said.
On politics, Niponi pointed that it would be a big loss for the people in Opar if the seat continues to be represented by the opposition.
“Currently, the people in Opar are yearning for more funding from the government but since our MP is from DAP and our assemblyman is from PSB, the people could not enjoy benefits from the government as other places. So, I think it’s time for us to change,” he said.
Opar is one of the two state constituencies under Mas Gading Parliamentary constituency and is currently represented by Datuk Ranum Mina of PSB and the MP of Mas gading is Mordi Bimol of DAP. The other state constituency is Tasik Biru.
On another issue, Niponi said he and his team have sent fresh food supplies to 155 households affected by the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) in Kampung Sebako 1 and Kampung Sebako 2 today.
In conjunction with the Chinese New Year, Niponi said SUPP Opar honours the contributions of its past leaders by presenting them with Chinese New Year goodies through its ‘JasaMu di Kenang’ outreach programme. — DayakDaily
