SEBUYAU, Jan 1: It was a grim and devastating start to the New Year with nine passengers including two young children being reportedly dead after their 4×4 vehicle rolled off Triso Ferry and sank into the water at about 3.15pm today.
The scene at the Triso Ferry jetty was horrific as members of the public rushed to rescue, pull out and attempted to resuscitate the unresponsive and unconscious victims whose bodies were laid out on the ground with some already covered with a towel.
According to a live video recording uploaded by a netizen, which had since gone viral, members of the public who were onboard the ferry together with ferry crews sprang into action to rescue and recover the victims.
The seven-minute video showed that all the victims were brought to land and given CPR at the ferry wharf.
Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak Operation Centre had immediately deployed Bomba Saratok and Simunjan team to the incident site located at Jalan Beladin Triso upon receiving a report of the incident.
The rescue team confirmed that nine people comprising five males and four females have died.
Bomba Simunjan is the nearest station to the site about 62km and has to connect to the other side of the river via ferry while Bomba Saratok Station is 98km away and connecting via Pusa Ferry.
Bomba Saratok with a seven-member team was headed by PBK II KUP Yusuf Jenamin while Bomba Simunjan deployed a four-member team and a rescue boat headed by PBK II Trajudin. — DayakDaily
