MIRI, May 11: Residents residing in Niah and Suai have been encouraged to venture into food production via agriculture as it can help them to generate income.

“As we all know, Niah and Suai are two strategic areas, flanked by two fast-developing [urban areas], namely Miri and Bintulu, and people from Suai and Niah should grab these opportunities to explore new business prospects in food production through the agriculture sector,” said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi yesterday.

He added, Bintulu and Miri are growing because of the oil and gas industry and petrochemical sector, which creates employment and attracts people to migrate to those areas.

“Thus, if residents in Suai and Niah venture into food production business, it would not only create extra income, but also support consumer demand for food supply from these two areas,” he pointed out.

Majang disclosed this at the launching of the Sustainable Oil Palm Growers Cooperative Niah Suai Berhad (KPSM)’s open day and its second Annual General Meeting (AGM) yesterday in Niah.

On another note, Majang lauded KPSM Suai Niah for organising various activities which he believed were capable of bringing change to smallholders in the area.

“Therefore, I encourage more participation from residents of longhouses and villages or smallholders to become KPSM cooperatives members, because when you are a member of KPSM, you can obtain input and valuable information concerning plantations,” he added. — DayakDaily
