Etim, who was 83, was admitted to the hospital on May 28 for treatment.

“Etim’s courageous actions during the ambush in Sibu in 1972, where he valiantly defended his convoy despite being wounded and outnumbered, exemplify the spirit of heroism and selflessness that we hold in the highest regard.

“His legacy of valour and patriotism will forever inspire future generations in Sarawak and beyond,” George said in a statement.

He went on to say that Sarawakians are immensely proud of their heroes’ bravery and sacrifices.

“Cpl Etim Bijam’s dedication and courage are a testament to the strength and resilience of our people.

“His story, along with those of other Sarawakian heroes like Sgt (Rtd) Datuk Awang Raweng and Temengong Datuk Kanang Langkau, is a powerful reminder of our rich history and the pivotal role Sarawakians have played in the defence of our nation,” he added.

He further called attention to the importance of addressing the welfare of veterans, stressing the need to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten and that they receive the support and recognition they deserve.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Cpl Etim Bijam. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to be a beacon of courage and patriotism for all Malaysians and especially for the people of Sarawak,” he remarked. — DayakDaily
