KUCHING, Sept 11: Newly appointed Kuching South City Council (MBKS) deputy mayor Dato Dr Zaiedi Suhaili hopes to see the council to work together with other local councils in developing Greater Kuching.
He said MBKS cannot work in a silo and partnerships with other local councils are required to achieve the said goal.
“We have to work closely with other city councils such as Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and our neighbour Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) in the development of Greater Kuching.
“I think we (MBKS) will pursue further with a greater effort to make Kuching City South a safe place to live, a nice place to stay and do business, social and cultural activities.
“Therefore, that should be our main objective in this council. I will support the mayor (Dato Wee Hong Seng) on all these aspects of the job,” he told a press conference after a swearing-in ceremony held at MBKS headquarters here today.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian who is Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) was present to witness the swearing-in ceremony.
Also present was Wee.
Zaiedi will assume the role of MBKS deputy mayor from Sept 1, 2023 until March 31, 2025, succeeding Hilmy Othman who has been promoted as the new mayor of DBKU.
The 68-year-old was in the Sarawak civil service from 1974 to 1985.
He previously served as a political secretary to the former Petra Jaya MP, the late Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman Daud, under three ministries namely Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (1990-1991), Ministry of Education (1991-1995) and Ministry of Agriculture (1995-1999).
He had also served as a board member of Kuching Water Board from 2007 to 2009 and was later appointed as a councillor of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) from 2009 before he was promoted as council deputy chairman in 2014.
In July 2016, he was appointed as a senator to replace Dayang Madinah Tun Openg by the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) and reappointed for the same role in 2019 until his retirement in 2022. — DayakDaily
