KUCHING, March 3: The newly open Spaoh Community Market, costing RM5 million, will be an ideal venue to generate income for rural folks in the area and boost their economic livelihood.
In a statement today, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said with such a venue available, rural folks must not only engage in selling their products but produce more.
“At the same time, they must listen to feedback from members of the public on how they can improve their services or increase their sales,” he said at the opening of the community market today.
Uggah advised those in the eatery business to create or improve existing dishes to attract more customers.
“We, your leaders, are willing to provide the necessary training in culinary skills and preparation.”
Uggah gave the reminder that Spaoh and its neighbouring areas, are known for their local puffer fish or “Buntal” besides sago worms and exotic jungle produce.
“If you can prepare this exotic food better than in other areas, you will attract people to the town.
“This will change the image of Spaoh town, which is always very quiet in the morning but full of people in the afternoon.”
Uggah also reminded the people to keep their town, community market, villages and longhouses in a hygienic state at all times.
“At the same time, they must protect against vandalism and theft of all the facilities that the government had prepared for them.”
Meanwhile, Uggah also revealed that a sum of RM20 million has been set aside to help develop the agriculture sector in Spaoh.
He disclosed that a new food court area (Medan Selera) cost RM5 million adjacent to the new market would be built in the third quarter of this year.
“In addition, the waterfront in front of the community market with a cost RM2 million would also be upgraded,” he said.
Uggah’s wife, Dato Doreen Mayang, Betong MP Dr Richard Rapu and Betong Resident Richard Michael Abunawas were also present. — DayakDaily
