KUCHING, Jan 8: The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) is set to launch upgraded MyKad and Malaysian passports equipped with advanced security features to meet modern technological standards.
Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the initiative is expected to begin by the end of the second quarter or the start of the third quarter this year.
“The move is crucial to maintain the high reliability of Malaysian passports, which are currently ranked among the top three most trusted passports globally in terms of visa-free access,” he said after attending the Ministry’s Monthly Assembly in Putrajaya today, as reported by TVS news.
He added that this ranking reflects the integrity of Malaysia’s travel documents and serves as a key benchmark to ensure they continue to meet the highest international standards.
Highlighting the need for periodic updates, Saifuddin explained that security documents naturally expire over time, and new versions are essential to maintain their reliability.
“The MyKad is a national security document, so upgrades must be made periodically in line with technological developments to address potential security vulnerabilities.
“The new passport and MyKad will feature enhanced security systems, particularly to prevent document forgery and misuse,” he said.
The Minister said the rollout will be announced in advance, with Malaysians expected to begin using the new passports within six months.
User specifications have been finalised and approved by the Immigration and National Registration Departments, and the next step is to inform the public.
He urged citizens not to rush, assuring that existing passports and MyKad will remain valid until their expiry. — DayakDaily
