BINTULU, April 12: The government expects the construction of an integrated lorry terminal to reduce the number of trips by heavy vehicles on main roads which in turn will improve congestion, increase road safety and create more efficient transportation services in Bintulu.

In a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Lim Shin said Bintulu town is getting very congested with vehicles and the presence of heavy vehicles and trucks will worsen the traffic situation.

“Road users have often complained about heavy vehicles parked on the road side and it is very dangerous for other motorists.

“Bintulu is a thriving industrial town with most areas travelled by heavy vehicles every day,” he said when visiting the lorry terminal construction site yesterday (April 11).

As such, Lee emphasised that the setting up of the lorry terminal in Bintulu is necessary to create a more reliable, efficient and safer transportation system, which will help to reduce traffic congestion in the town centre.

“I hope with the completion of the new lorry terminal, all lorries and other heavy vehicles will be able to use the facility without having to [travel on] the main roads of the city,” he added. — DayakDaily
