MIRI, July 19: A giant ‘Miri’ sign has been erected on top of Bukit Telaga Minyak (also known as Canada Hill) today.
According to a statement from Miri City Council (MCC), its Mayor Adam Yii officiated the ceremony this morning.
The all-white sign, measuring 37 meter in length and 18 meter tall, sits at the hilltop overlooking Miri City below, with the South China Sea at the forefront and is reminiscent of America’s world famous ‘Hollywood’ sign.
The Miri sign is in close vicinity to the Miri Petroleum Science Museum, and the replica of Oil Well Number One fondly known as the ‘Grand Old Lady’ as well as another old timey oil-industry related structure — ‘The Nodding Donkey’.
MCC said the erection work supported by four columns was started in February 2022.
“It is the latest effort and commitment of Miri City Council to develop more places of tourism attraction for Miri City,” said MCC.
MCC explained that he contract works have undergone two revisions with the purpose of further strengthening the structure to withstand inclement weather at the hilltop as well as to pave provisions for a lighting system around the sign.
“The new sign atop Bukit Telaga Minyak will give added value to the present place of interest.
“Apart from this, many Mirians believe that it is the ideal site of illustrating Miri City is being blessed with the solid background of Bukit Telaga Minyak (Canada Hill) and ocean of prospects in the forefront,” said MCC.
The Council is confident that once the project is fully constructed and completed with floodlights, it will become another iconic structure of Miri City. — DayakDaily
