KUCHING, Dec 10: The planned new Kuching International Airport will feature a futuristic design, surpassing the hub model currently used in Doha, Qatar.

Sarawak’s Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, highlighted that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has envisioned the state-of-the-art airport to draw inspiration from Doha’s renowned infrastructure.

“However, the Doha model will not be enough because we are designing a futuristic airport.

“We can use the existing model as a guide but we would need to improve on it,” he said during Sarawak Transport Forum 2024 held at Riverside Majestic Hotel here today.

He also mentioned that the Sarawak government is currently in the final stage of acquiring MASwings airlines.

At the same time, Lee mentioned that the Sarawak government aims to leverage the new airline and international airport to establish Sarawak’s aerospace industry.

This includes developing supporting infrastructure such as Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities for aircraft, training centers for aircraft engineers and mechanics, and pilot training programs.

“Additionally, we are exploring opportunities to attract companies to set up aircraft parts manufacturing operations here.

“Equally important is the establishment of a modern regional cargo terminal to boost logistics capabilities.

“Ultimately, our goal is to create an aerotropolis—a dynamic aviation-centered urban development. This vision represents our ambitious plan for Sarawak’s future,” he added.
