New Covid-19 cases in Kuching climb to 247 as Sarawak records 707 cases, one fatality

KUCHING, June 8: Kuching saw its daily number of new Covid-19 cases climb to 247 as Sarawak recorded 707 cases and one death today to push the State’s tally of positive cases to 52,581 and death toll to 327.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in its daily update on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak, revealed that 477 cases or 67.7 per cent of the total new cases detected occurred in five districts — Kuching, Bintulu, Sri Aman, Miri and Song.

Kuching remained as the district with highest number of daily infections for 10 consecutive days at 247 followed by Bintulu (88), Sri Aman (53), Miri (46), Song (43), Subis (40), Kapit (32), Mukah (25), Samarahan (24), Sibu (21), Beluru (17), Bau (12), Marudi (10), Asajaya (9), Selangau (8), Tatau (6), Tanjung Manis (5), Betong (4), Belaga and Kabong (3 each), Sarikei, Lubok Antu and Serian (2 each) while Bukit Mabong, Kanowit, Pusa, Tebedu and Telang Usan has one case each.

Of the 707 cases, SDMC reported that 39 cases were symptomatic while 582 cases consisted of those who have been moved into quarantine.

Briefly, a total of 437 cases were detected from individual screenings of contacts to positive cases while 143 cases were from screenings linked to active clusters, 104 cases were from other screenings in healthcare facilities, 21 cases were from symptomatic screenings and two import cases with one involved a returnee from Holland.

As for the sole Covid-19 fatality, it was reported in Sri Aman Hospital and involves an 83-year-old man from Lubok Antu who tested positive on May 26. The deceased was comorbid with heart disease, chronic obstructive lung disease, hypertension and dyslipidemia.

Meanwhile, Sarawak also recorded 541 recoveries to increase the number of positive cases recovered and discharged as of today to 42,898 or 81.58 per cent of total Covid-19 cases in Sarawak.

There are 9,240 active cases still receiving treatment and being isolated in hospitals and Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRCs) across the State.

With one new Covid-19 cluster declared today in Beluru dubbed the Ulu Teru Cluster with 46 positive cases confirmed, and three clusters namely Jalan Disa in Sibu, Sains Bakam in Miri and Sungai Nirai in Selangau officially ended, the number of active clusters in Sarawak now stands at 75.

Of this, a total of 13 clusters recorded an increase in daily infections with 146 cases.

The Covid-19 status of Julau and Saratok districts have also been revised to yellow from orange zones after recording 18 and 19 cases respectively in the last 14 days.

As such, the number of yellow zone districts has increased to 10 while the number of orange zone districts fell to two (Simunjan and Pusa).

There are 28 districts in Sarawak currently classified as Covid-19 red zones, with no districts free from Covid-19 (green zones). — DayakDaily
