KUCHING, July 10: Malaysian Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad says the National Carbon Policy will be implemented later this year after discussions with the Federal government.
Nik Nazmi stated this to reporters after paying a courtesy call to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.
“The National Carbon Policy framework will be presented at the Malaysia Climate Change Action Council (MyCAC) meeting this Friday, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and attended by ‘menteris besar’ and chief ministers.
“We will outline how we intend to implement the National Carbon Policy in greater detail as soon as possible. The Federal government’s role is to facilitate carbon policy in the states involved,” he said.
He went on to say that, based on the results of the meeting’s discussion, the government will also examine the regulatory requirements for law enforcement and the monetisation of carbon businesses.
“Carbon trading does not require any amendments to the law, as it primarily involves legislation and policy,” he stated.
Nik Nazmi further mentioned that his ministry actively engaged in carbon trading discussions with state governments as land for carbon storage are state matters.
Also present at the press conference were Deputy Premier of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian and Sarawak Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii. — DayakDaily
