KAPIT, Nov 5: Campaigning in the 15th General Election (GE15) is a challenge for candidates in the rural areas of Sarawak as there is limited access to the internet or no connectivity at all.
Admitting this, Kapit incumbent Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said he wants to make use of social media as much as possible, but at the same time, it is almost impossible to convey his campaign messages across to each community in the constituency,
“I may not be able to cover every area this way due to unsatisfactory internet connection in many places.
“Therefore, I will use the traditional method, the old way of how we did it before in the past elections,” Nanta told reporters at Meligai Hotel after the nomination process earlier today.
Together with the help of the three assemblymen under the Kapit constituency — Datuk Wilson Nyabong (Pelagus), Jefferson Jamit Unyat (Bukit Goram), and Lidam Assan (Katibas) — Nanta said they would gather the communities in Song and Kapit every day during the campaigning period.
Calling himself lucky as the three who are all from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) are helping him to go into battle this time, Nanta said they have always been a united team, lending each other their hands, manpower, and machinery to ensure victories are on their side.
Meanwhile, when asked for his thoughts on the possibility of young voters voting for the Opposition since almost 50 per cent of the latest electoral are under the age of 40, Nanta said that based on the trend and results from the recent Sarawak Election, he is not too worried.
“I won handsomely in the 14th General Election (GE14), while Wilson, Jefferson, and Lidam also won in the State election. It shows that majority of the people in Kapit are with GPS because we have always been there for them,” he asserted.
Nanta is facing two others — Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Khusyairy Pangkas @ Pangkas Unggang and Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak’s (PBDS) Robert Saweng — for the Kapit parliamentary seat as he seeks a sixth term in office.
In the 2018 14th General Election, Nanta polled 14,302 votes to defeat Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Paren Nyawi, who received 3,823 votes, by a 10,479-vote majority. — DayakDaily
