SIBU, Jan 20: Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee has proposed that a cancer centre be established in Sibu due to more strategic logistical factors.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report today, he said this is because of Sibu’s central location within Sarawak as patients need to undergo regular follow-up treatments.

“Maybe some will disagree with me, but this is my own opinion. It doesn’t mean we are not in favour of the cancer centre being built in Kuching, but Sibu’s position is more strategic to cater to patients Statewide,” he said.

He said this during the Rejang Medical Centre (RMC) 22nd Anniversary Dinner last night (Jan 19).

The Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak added that with a central location, patients will face easier travel and lower costs for treatment.

Meanwhile, he also suggested that the government consider working with private hospitals to increase the quality of healthcare services in Sarawak.

“It is a difficult task for the government to provide comprehensive health services without the support of the private sector. With this collaboration, the people can benefit from more modern equipment and better facilities,” he said.

Earlier, he also appreciated the great role played by RMC in combating the Covid-19 pandemic, including providing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and large-scale vaccinations to protect the people. — DayakDaily
