SIBU, Oct 31: If the outcome of the 2018 State Election is anything to go by, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will be able to break the Opposition’s control over the Sibu and Lanang parliamentary seats in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee believed that this general election is the best chance for GPS to wrest the two seats.

“Based on the statistics of the last State Election, we are able to make it. We have won the Bukit Assek and Dudong State seats which form the Lanang seat. We have also won the Pelawan and Nangka seats, which (means) mathematically we have also won the Sibu seat,” he said at a press conference in conjunction with the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Zones 7 and 8 Women’s Wing Election Machinery meeting.

Zones 7 and 8 cover Tanjung Manis, Sarikei, Julau, Lanang, Sibu, Selangau and Kanowit.

“The spirit of the party is (at a) very high (level) now. Of course we want to end the Opposition’s era in Sibu. This is the best chance,” Dr Annuar said.

He added that GPS had shown in the State Election that it could win the election on its own, whereas previously it was with Barisan Nasional.

PBB Women chief, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said GPS component parties would be working together to win the Lanang and Sibu seats.

“We will be working as a team. It is no more PBB, PRS (Parti Rakyat Sarawak), SUPP (Sarawak United Peoples’ Party) or PDP (Progressive Democratic Party). We are not working in silos. When the election comes, we will be working as one group, that is GPS, as the candidates are from GPS,” she said.

On winning over young voters, she said it would be based on the State’s initiatives which not only aimed to help the present generation but also the youths.

On the zone meeting, she stressed that it was held for the wing to make preparations for the election.

“Our meeting is to ensure that our preparation is solid as our mission is to win the election. We want the Wanita (wing) to play an important role in getting whichever GPS candidates to win the election,” she said.
