JULAU, Feb 27: The Nanga Dong Waterfall in Ulu Julau is the up and rising must-check-in hotspot destination for quite a while now for many residents in Central Sarawak.

During public holidays, visitors from various parts of Central Sarawak such as Kanowit, Sibu and Sarikei throng the mini waterfall, enjoying the cold river water hidden under lush green consisting of trees, shrubs and bushes.

To make it friendly and accessible to visitors, concrete stairs were constructed. From the Nanga Dong Longhouse, it is a descent of 200 meters to reach the waterfall which is still pristine and untouched, despite its popularity.

Irena, a resident of Nanga Dong Longhouse told D’Drift Team that in one of Malaysia’s Independence Days, the longhouse collected several hundred ringgit in entrance fees. The Longhouse JKKK charges RM1 for children below 12 years old and RM2 for adults; RM3 or RM5 for a car, depending on its capacity, and RM5 for a lorry and van.

So one can imagine how popular Nanga Dong is, especially during public holidays.

“Each household takes turns to clear the rubbish every day,” said Irena. That is why there was not a single piece of garbage in sight, only the flood marks left by retreating river water.

Today, water level was low, despite heavy rain since last night. From the flood marks, it seemed that the river could grow to three times its size if there were continuous rain on the upstream.

Sherwin, 20, a student who just completed his Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) is one of those who made the one-hour drive from Kanowit to visit Nanga Dong Waterfall.

He learned about the place through recommendations from a relative, shared via social media.

With just a rough direction, he and four of his friends managed to find the place by following the signboards.

“There is another waterfall between Kanowit and Kapit. However, that one is very far inland and one has to trek the jungle before reaching it.

“I prefer this waterfall because I can drive directly to here, and it is only one hour away,” he said. — DayakDaily
