SIBU, Feb 18: The Veterinary Department has been urged to investigate the mass deaths of between 200 to 300 pigs during the last two weeks in Sungai Sengan area.

Sungai Sengan is located about 30km from Sibu town. It is near Sibu Jaya.

Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Durin Branch chairman Teo Boon Siew said the cause of the deaths of these pigs needs to be known immediately so as to prevent more deaths.

“I hope the veterinary department will quickly investigate the matter as residents in the rural area cannot afford to suffer more,” he said.

Teo also hoped the Agriculture Department would provide financial relief to the affected pig farmers.

According to Teo, these 200 to 300 pigs belonged to residents in 11 longhouses in Ulu Sengan and 4 longhouses in Sungai Menyan.

“They died over the course of two weeks for reasons which the owners are still unsure about,” he said.

Meanwhile a resident of Rumah Magdeline in the area, Sunaang Radin,45, said 13 of his pigs died in four days starting Tuesday (Feb 15).

“These 13 pigs were all six months old and they died within four days’ time,” he said.
