MIRI, Aug 13: The MyLesen B2 Programme is expanding access to its 1,000 allocated slots in Miri, enabling eligible higher learning institution (IPT) students and those from the B40 group to obtain a motorcycle licence at a subsidised cost of RM260.
Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the expansion was aimed at providing more people with access to motorcycle licences while strengthening road safety awareness.
He said the programme was first introduced in Miri in 2024 after many secondary school students were found riding motorcycles to school without valid licences.
“During my visits to secondary schools in Miri in 2023, I found that many students were riding motorcycles to school and almost 90 per cent did not have licences.
“This was very worrying, especially from the aspect of road safety,” he was quoted as saying by TVS.
Lee said this when met after the Coordination Meeting on Additional MyLesen B2 Programme Quota for DUN N.75 Senadin at the Road Transport Department (JPJ) office here today.
He said 1,690 students had so far obtained motorcycle licences through the programme.
The programme has since been expanded to members of the public, particularly those from the B40 group.
Applicants only need to pay RM260, compared with the actual cost of RM760 to obtain a motorcycle licence, with the government subsidising the remaining RM500.
However, those who already hold a driving licence are not eligible for the programme and must apply for a motorcycle licence independently.
Lee said 1,000 slots had been allocated under the programme, with the ministry now seeking an additional quota to meet continued demand.
He also said the Sarawak Transport Ministry was working with JPJ through the T-ABC programme to promote transport awareness, behavioural change and road safety.
The initiative aims to educate road users on complying with traffic regulations, prioritising safety and practising greater tolerance and courtesy while on the road.
“Through this education programme, we want to remind road users to always comply with traffic regulations, prioritise safety and have a good and tolerant attitude.
“This is among our efforts to reduce road accidents,” he said.
Those interested can submit their applications by Sept 15 at the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Senadin Branch Service Centre or the Miri JPJ office.
Applicants are required to submit a copy of their identity card and two passport-sized photographs with a white background. — DayakDaily
