KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1: The Works Ministry (KKR) is developing a National Reference Platform for Road Information under the MyJalan initiative to consolidate road data from federal, state and local authorities, as well as highway concessionaires, into a single national system.
Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the initiative aims to establish a unified national road data ecosystem based on common standards, governance frameworks and streamlined data collection processes.
“Our objective is to have one national picture of Malaysia’s roads with one data, one standard and one national road data ecosystem,” he said at a press conference after the closing ceremony of the MyASEAN Roads and Traffic Tech Expo (MyARTTE) 2026 here on Wednesday (Sept 30).
Prior to officiating the closing ceremony, Nanta chaired the MyJalan National Data Agenda roundtable meeting and witnessed the exchange of Road Asset Data Declaration (DDJ) documents between KKR and participating state governments.
He said more than half of the states had already committed to the initiative, with Penang becoming the latest to sign the agreement.
Nanta said he was confident the remaining five states would also participate, noting that they required more time to complete the necessary processes.
He said an immediate priority under the roadmap was to establish clear road ownership boundaries through standardised Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping.
To safeguard data integrity, road asset owners would also be required to maintain complete and regularly updated databases, supported by clear key performance indicators (KPIs), action plans and implementation timelines.
Nanta said accurate and timely road data was critical to enabling data-driven decisions on road maintenance and infrastructure planning, while allowing authorities to respond more quickly to public complaints.
He said better coordination and access to reliable data could also help address traffic congestion and reduce the risk of fatal road accidents.
Nanta stressed the need for greater collaboration across agencies and the private sector to overcome siloed approaches, particularly where road networks and responsibilities overlap across different jurisdictions.
He said the public should also be kept informed about how different road networks and authorities are interconnected, enabling road users to travel with greater certainty over safety, connectivity and comfort.
Earlier in his speech, Nanta said initiatives such as MyJalan and the No Wrong Door Policy reflected a simple but important principle: that government should organise itself around the needs of the rakyat rather than institutional boundaries.
Also present were Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan; Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) director-general Mohd Hadzmir Yusoff; Public Works Department (JKR) deputy director-general (Infrastructure Sector) Mohd Shahrom Ahmad Saman; Association of Highway Concessionaires Malaysia (PSKLM) president Azmee Nin; and Touch ‘n Go Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Praba Sangarajoo. — Bernama
