KUCHING, Aug 8: Six stations in Sarawak have recorded unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) readings as of 2pm today—an increase from five areas in the earlier 11am readings on the same day.
According to the API Management System (APIMS), Serian still recorded the highest reading at 171, followed by Samarahan (156), Kuching (155), Bintulu (153), Sri Aman (130), and Mukah (107). The remaining areas recorded moderate readings between 98 and 64.
Due to the worsening haze situation, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advised the public to remain vigilant and monitor the latest API readings and official advisories.
This was relayed in a separate statement by its chairman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who said that the transboundary haze is expected to affect 19 areas in the State over the coming days, with prevailing wind patterns carrying smoke from hotspots in neighbouring regions.
The areas identified are Betong, Bintulu, Daro, Julau, Kanowit, Kuching, Lundu, Marudi, Miri, Mukah, Pakan, Samarahan, Saratok, Serian, Sibu, Simunjan, Song, Sri Aman, and Tatau.
Citing data from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), he said that the latest forecast also indicates that air quality may deteriorate in certain areas, with unhealthy PM2.5 concentrations forecast for Miri and Serian on Aug 8, followed by Betong on Aug 9,” he said.
In addition to monitoring the API, he also advised the public to do the following:
- Reduce outdoor activities, especially strenuous exercise, when air quality deteriorates.
- Keep doors and windows closed when haze levels are high.
- Wear a suitable face mask when outdoors, particularly for children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory conditions.
- Stay well hydrated and seek medical attention if experiencing breathing difficulties, chest discomfort or persistent coughing.
- Do not engage in open burning and report any fire or open-burning activities to the relevant authorities.
At the same time, Uggah reminded the public that open burning is an offence under the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Ordinance. Offenders may be liable to a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
He also urged the public to report any cases of open burning to the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) through its hotlines at 082-447 488 or 082-319 500.
“SDMC, together with MetMalaysia, NREB, the Department of Environment (DOE), and other relevant agencies, will continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate the necessary response measures to safeguard public health and safety.
