KUCHING, Dec 30: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is stepping down as the chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN) effective Jan 1, 2026.
“I would like to thank all party leadership who have supported me during my tenure as chairman since it was established five years ago.
“I wish all the best to the party leadership and its member parties,” the former prime minister said in a statement on Facebook today.
No further details were given on who would succeed him.
According to The Edge, the resignation came amid escalating tensions within the coalition, as relations between Muhyiddin-led Bersatu and PAS reached a boiling point following a political crisis in Perlis.
The state’s Menteri Besar, Mohd Shukri Ramli of PAS, was ousted over the weekend, allegedly due to health reasons. He was replaced by Abu Bakar Hamzah from Bersatu—a move PAS leaders have interpreted as a betrayal.
PAS is now prepared to take over the reins of PN, according to the party’s youth chief, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, as reported by multiple news outlets on Tuesday. — DayakDaily
