KUCHING, Feb 2: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak Division issued a reminder to employers that the implementation of the Minimum Wage Order (PGM) setting the minimum wage at RM1,700 per month came into effect yesterday (Feb 1).

According to a statement, MTUC Sarawak chairman Zaidi Nasar said that the order mandates employers with five or more employees to comply with the requirement.

He added that employers engaged in professional activities are also subject to the order, regardless of the number of workers employed.

“For employers with fewer than five employees, the order will be effective from August 1, 2025.

“MTUC emphasises that the minimum wage refers to basic salary and does not include allowances, incentives, or other additional payments,” he said.

Zaidi Nasar further explained that workers paid on a task-based, tonnage, assignment, journey, or commission basis are also entitled to receive a monthly wage of no less than RM1,700.

He stressed that employers are not allowed to pay a basic wage lower than the stipulated minimum wage, even with the consent of the employee.

“In cases of non-compliance, employees are encouraged to lodge complaints with the Department of Labour.

“This increase in the minimum wage is intended to help workers cope with the rising cost of living,” he added.

Workers facing issues can contact the Department of Labour or MTUC Sarawak Division via e-mail at agsmtucswk@gmail.com for assistance. — DayakDaily
