KUCHING, May 27: Malaysia greatly welcomes the potential for collaboration between local industry players and the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) with a focus on areas such as infrastructure performance benchmarking, capacity building, and knowledge exchange on innovative highway management and digital construction technologies.

In a Facebook post, Malaysian Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this following a working visit to the Republic of Korea to attend the ITS Asia Pacific Forum 2025, where he had the opportunity to conduct a technical visit to the KEC, which is South Korea’s national expressway agency responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of over 5,000 kilometres of expressways across the country.

“I was truly impressed by how KEC fully leverages technology not only to enhance expressway operations and road user safety but also to support environmental sustainability efforts.

“The use of integrated traffic management systems, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) for predictive maintenance, alongside the deployment of smart infrastructure, offers valuable insights and inspiration for Malaysia’s own efforts to modernise its highway systems,” he said.

He added that KEC demonstrated a strong commitment to public service values, ensuring infrastructure development is inclusive, accessible, and environmentally friendly.

Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said the technical visit further strengthens Malaysia’s commitment to transforming its road infrastructure in line with the direction and vision outlined in the Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030, currently being developed by the Ministry of Works.

“KEC’s experience in implementing and managing advanced tolling systems since 2017 offers Malaysia new exposure and perspectives, especially as the government is also defining a new direction in toll system management.

“By learning from international best practices, Malaysia can accelerate the implementation of a more efficient, safer, and sustainable intelligent and integrated transportation system,” he said.

He also expressed his appreciation to KEC’s leadership and its team, especially the managing director, Lim Chan Soo, for the warm hospitality and constructive discussions. — DayakDaily
