KUCHING, March 24: Why not experience dinner in the dark or a film night with no lights on during Earth Hour, says Lo Khere Chiang, chairman of the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
According to a press release, Lo urged all relevant government agencies, private sectors, and local communities under the jurisdiction of Padawan Municipality to participate in this event by turning off their lights for one hour in support of Earth Hour 2022, which will take place on March 26, 2022, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.
He explained that Earth Hour should be more than just turning off lights for an hour; it should be a time to commit to treating our planet better.
“The goal is to raise global awareness of our energy use, consumption, impact, and long-term effects on the environment as well as to help our future and encourage urgent change.
“Each and every day, we contribute to the planet’s temperature rise by consuming or wasting electricity,” he pointed out.
Lo went on to say that in recent years, the Earth Hour movement has seen entire streets, buildings, landmarks, and city skylines go dark to draw attention to climate change and global warming issues.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Padawan Municipal Council’s (PMC) Organising Committee of the Earth Hour Programme 2022 for their dedication and commitment to participating in the annual Earth Hour Event, which is organised by 190 countries worldwide.
“This year, the PMC is participating in this event for the first time, which I believe is critical to our efforts to save the planet,” he said.
Lo, who is also the Batu Kitang assemblyman, suggested a few ways to make Earth Hour more enjoyable, such as planning an indoor scavenger hunt, having fun activities for the kids such as playing board games by candlelight and taking the time to take a break from all our electronic devices.
Earth Hour is a global movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the event is held annually to encourage people to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on a specific day near the end of March. — DayakDaily
