KUCHING, Dec 20: Majlis Perbandaran Kota Samarahan (MPKS) chairman Dato Peter Minos has declared that Sarawak is does not welcome zealots, emphasising that extremists should stay away from the State.

In a statement, Minos expressed agreement with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s stance on the recent controversy over decorating Christmas cakes with ‘Merry Christmas’ greetings.

He described the issue as ridiculous and nonsensical, adding that such extremism makes life difficult and inconvenient.

“We fully agree with our Sarawak Premier that it is ridiculous, even nonsensical, that a Christmas cake had become a contentious issue, and earlier it was men’s shorts for entering a local council office,” he said.

Minos highlighted that after protests, the ruling on Christmas cake decorations was withdrawn.

He emphasised that life becomes stressful when extremists dictate what people can or cannot do.

“If I am told to avoid cakes with Christmas wishes wordings and must wear this or that when entering government offices, very soon the fanatics will say: cannot eat or wear this and that and cannot do this or that we normally do,” he lamented.

Minos urged extremists to stay in Peninsular Malaysia and allow Sarawak to lead its life the way it always has.

“There is no point quarreling or arguing with extremist thinking. We keep it with our fair, open, and reasonable way. Do not let the zealots come and spread their negative and irritating way,” he concluded. — DayakDaily
