KUCHING, March 25: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has launched the Public Toilet Cleanliness Campaign 2025 as part of its Bandar Sejahtera (Prosperous City) strategic project.
According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos said the campaign aims to raise residents’ awareness of the importance of public toilet cleanliness and encourage premises owners to ensure their facilities are always clean and comfortable.
He added that there are two main competitions in the campaign—the Toilet of the Year Award (TOTYA) 2025 and the MPKS-level Public Toilet Cleanliness Competition 2025.
“For TOTYA 2025, it is open to premises such as hotels, shopping centres, restaurants, gas stations and houses of worship. The closing date for entries is April 30,” he said in a press conference on March 24.
The MPKS-level Public Toilet Cleanliness Competition 2025 is open to food premises, gas stations, houses of worship, hotels, shopping centres, and primary and secondary schools.
As part of this campaign, he said the MPKS will hold an awareness briefing session in April, where premises that achieve a five-star rating will have the opportunity to win lucrative prizes.
Additionally, Minos also announced a 50 per cent discount promotion on late payment fines for assessment tax arrears to property owners under the council’s jurisdiction.
He explained that the promotion period started on February 1 and will run until May 31, 2025. Payments can be made at the MPKS Counter or online via Sarawak Pay, and at UTC Sarawak, H&L Supermarket, and Sarawak Service Kiosks.
“Property owners are advised to settle their arrears immediately to enjoy this discount, and any inquiries can be directed to the MPKS Assessment Department via WhatsApp at 016-5857114,” he said.
Meanwhile, MPKS secretary Gustian Durani also announced the provision of the ‘roll on roll off’ (RoRo) bin service to facilitate the disposal of bulk waste in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
The service period starts from March 19 to April 8, and among the locations are the following:
- Taman Samarindah (Bin Centre Flat Lorong 16)
- Market Bandar Riyal (Green Centre)
- Taman Desa Ilmu (Uptown Parking Lot)
- Kampung Sindang (Lorong 21, Denymas Cafe)
- Kampung Baru (entrance road from Samarahan Bridge)
- Kampung Baru (road to Kampung Rembus)
- Kampung Tambirat (Rumah Tong, MPKS Tambirat Hawker Centre)
- Pasar Asajaya (Tong Market site)
- Pekan Sadong Jaya (public toilet)
- Pekan Sadong Jaya (Dolet Cafe roadside)
- Kampung Semera Lot (Unity Hall)
- Kampung Semera Lot Baru
Gustian advised residents to transport their bulk waste to the bins and not to throw tyres into them.
Additionally, Gustian introduced a new application, MyWC (My Water Closet), which helps users find public toilets within a 25-kilometre radius and can now be downloaded from Google Play and the App Store.
He said that among the main functions of MyWC is to search for toilets based on star ratings and provide information on paid or free toilets, OKU-friendly toilets, and toilets that have baby diaper changing rooms. — DayakDaily
