KUCHING, July 8: The Sarawak government has proposed signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) to kickstart the acquisition of MASwings.
According to the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) in a statement today, the proposal was forwarded by Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin and the Sarawak delegation in a meeting with Khazanah Nasional during a courtesy visit in Kuala Lumpur today.
The MoU would help initiate in-depth discussions, establish clear parameters, define the scopes, set timelines, and facilitate the acquisition of MASwings.
The primary objective of the meeting was to brief Khazanah on the proposed take-over of MASwings Sdn Bhd by the Sarawak government as a follow up from the meeting with Minister of Transport Malaysia Anthony Loke on June 30 in Putrajaya.
It said that during the meeting, they also discussed existing air connectivity issues affecting Sarawak, especially direct international flights.
“Sarawak presently has only three direct international routes, namely Singapore, Bandar Seri Begawan and Jakarta. There is therefore a need for a concerted effort to establish more direct international routes to promote tourism, trade and investment.
“In this connection, the Sarawak government has therefore decided to set up its own airlines through the acquisition of MASwings,” it added. — DayakDaily
