Motorcyclist succumbs to injuries in fatal accident at Sungai Merah, Sibu

SIBU, July 19: A 17-year-old labourer succumbed to serious injuries after the motorcycle he was riding rammed into the rear of a lorry at Sungai Merah here today.

His wife, also aged 17, who was pillion riding with him suffered bodily injury and has been admitted to Sibu Hospital for treatment.

Sibu District Police Chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said at about 3.15pm, the 54-year-old driver of the lorry was believed to have stopped at the roadside to check on the vehicle.

“However the deceased who was travelling in the same direction with a pillion rider could not avoid the lorry on time and rammed into its rear part,” he said.

The victim from Rumah Semourai, Sungai Antu died on the spot.

The woman, who is seven months’ pregnant,  was rushed to the hospital by an ambulance.

The case is investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — DayakDaily
