KUCHING, March 21: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) is engaging with the Ministry of Finance (MOF) to introduce measures aimed at mitigating the immediate impacts of rising diesel prices on the tourism transport sector, while ensuring the long-term development and resilience of the industry.
Minister Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said the recent surge in diesel costs has placed significant pressure on tourism transport operators, particularly those heavily reliant on diesel, potentially affecting inbound tourism, business operations, and the overall stability of the tourism ecosystem.
“The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and has initiated consultations with the Ministry of Finance to explore targeted, time-bound support measures that can help alleviate short-term pressures while maintaining the sector’s long-term health,” he said in a statement posted on his social media today.
He emphasised that the tourism transport sector is a vital pillar of the country’s tourism industry and that any government intervention will follow a “stabilise and upgrade” approach.
This includes measures such as vehicle renewal programmes, appropriate financial support, and improvements to the regulatory framework governing the sector.
“The government’s objective is not just to address immediate challenges, but to build a more resilient, competitive tourism transport system. Any support provided will be structured with the long-term development of the industry in mind, not as a temporary fix,” he added.
Tiong also urged industry players to maintain close communication with the government and engage in rational dialogue to address the issue collaboratively.
“Only through cooperation can we stabilise the sector under current conditions and lay a strong foundation for the success of Visit Malaysia Year 2026,” he said.
The Minister urged all stakeholders to remain calm and act prudently, emphasising that the government will strive to balance various interests and implement practical, compromise-based solutions to navigate the challenges posed by rising diesel costs. — DayakDaily
