KUCHING, June 9: Local handicrafts are not just a reflection of a community’s cultural identity, but they also have the potential to drive community-based economies.
This was stated by the Federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Dato’ Seri Tiong King Sing, in a Facebook post today, following his third day of Gawai Dayak celebrations in Sibu.
“One thing that makes me feel very proud is to see the community’s handicrafts being put on display, such as the pua kumbu and traditional accessories, which are finely made with significant value.
“As the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, I often emphasise the vital importance of elevating our local products to greater prominence.
“Handicrafts not only reflect our cultural identity, but they also have the potential to drive community-based economies. With consistent quality and promotion, there’s every possibility that these unique products will become a national pride recognised on the global stage,” he said.
On his visit, Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman and Bintulu MP, said he visited four longhouses—Rumah (Rh) Manjan Maju, Rh Sawai Gaong, Rh Udam Tuah, and Rh Meling Embol.
“What always touches the heart is the strong spirit of unity and togetherness in the longhouse community. Everyone sits together, works together, and welcomes guests regardless of background — this is the true face of harmony that is the pillar of our community’s strength.
“Thank you to all longhouse families who welcomed us. Every visit brings its own stories, and I am grateful to have been part of this meaningful Gawai Dayak,” he said. — DayakDaily
