KUCHING, July 21: History textbooks used in schools should be reviewed to ensure that facts relating to Sarawak’s history and the formation of Malaysia are presented accurately and in a balanced manner to the younger generation.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said history textbooks should contain accurate facts, particularly regarding Sarawak’s position in the formation of Malaysia, and expressed hope that the Ministry of Education (MOE) would review the existing content.
“We also hope the MOE will review this historical content so that the correct history is taught and learned by all Malaysians,” he said after officiating the Sarawak Day History Exhibition 2026 at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang in Sibu today.
Lee, who is also the minister responsible for the Sarawak Day 2026 celebrations, explained that the exhibition was organised to educate and raise awareness on Sarawak’s history, beginning with the Brunei Sultanate era, followed by the Brooke Rajahs’ rule, the Japanese Occupation, British administration, and culminating in Sarawak attaining self-government on July 22, 1963.
He added that the exhibition also features various documents related to the formation of Malaysia to provide the public with a more accurate understanding of the nation’s history.
The Senadin assemblyman said that, besides highlighting Sarawak’s history, the exhibition also showcases the State’s achievements and development since attaining self-government and following the formation of Malaysia.
He therefore encouraged more Sarawakians, especially school students, to visit the exhibition to gain a deeper understanding of the State’s history and appreciate the journey towards the formation of Malaysia.
The Sarawak Day History Exhibition 2026 is a collaboration between the Sarawak Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Protocol, Ceremonial and Event Management Unit (UPPAN), Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, National Archives of Malaysia Sarawak, Sarawak Museum Department, and TVS.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee; Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Sarawak Datuk Len Talif Salleh; Sarawak Deputy Secretary (Administration) Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED) Dzulkornain Masron; and Sibu Division Deputy Resident Christopher Ranggau Unting. — DayakDaily
