KUCHING, March 25: The safety and surveillance of Sarawak’s waters will be further strengthened through key projects spearheaded by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), including the implementation of the Sea Surveillance System (SWASLA).

According to a TVS news report, MMEA Director-General Rear Admiral (Maritime) Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the project involves the installation of radar systems at three key locations in Sarawak—Canada Hill in Miri, Bukit Nyabau in Bintulu, and Tanjung Datu in Kuching.

“The three sites have been identified, and the project, which has already been approved, will cost RM200 million,” he said.

Mohd Rosli disclosed this after paying a courtesy visit to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.

He added that the project would significantly enhance maritime monitoring systems and help deter illegal activities at sea.

In February, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that the enhancement of surveillance technology such as SWASLA is part of the federal government’s broader initiative to improve national maritime security.

The radar systems are expected to cover strategic locations identified as maritime crime hotspots, particularly areas prone to drug trafficking, smuggling of migrants, and contraband goods.

Mohd Rosli also noted that discussions with the Premier included the proposed development of the Sarikei Maritime Zone.

“We have submitted a request for land acquisition for the project, which is currently being reviewed at the state government level,” he said.

Also present during the visit were MMEA Deputy Director-General (Logistics) Maritime Vice Admiral (M) Datuk Saiful Lizan Ibrahim, MMEA Director of Intelligence Rear Admiral (M) Datuk Md Fauzi Othman, MMEA Director of Search and Rescue Rear Admiral (M) Kamal Ariffin Jusoh, and Sarawak Maritime Director Rear Admiral (M) Mohd Khairi Abd Aziz. — DayakDaily
