KUCHING, March 31: Federal Minister of Works and Kapit MP, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi attended the final tribute ceremony for the late Menak Kilat, mother of Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Law and Customs), at Jamit’s residence in Sibu yesterday (March 30).

The ceremony, known as ‘Ngetas Ulit dan Ngelumbong’ in Iban culture, was also attended by Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, the Deputy Digital Minister and Hulu Rajang MP.

“Today, I attended the traditional ceremony of ‘Ngetas Ulit dan Ngelumbong’, or the final tribute to my late aunt, Menak Anak Kilat.

“The deceased, who is the mother of YB Datuk Jefferson Jamit, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Bumiputera Laws and Customs) and Bukit Goram assemblyman, died about two weeks ago,” he said in a Facebook posot yesterday.

Nanta explained that ‘Ngetas Ulit’ and ‘Ngelumbong’ are the final rituals in Iban culture performed to honour someone who has passed away.

“My feelings are mixed, sad because the deceased was one of my close aunts. I also felt moved because many relatives and friends were present to pay their last respects to the deceased. On behalf of YB Datuk Jefferson Jamit, I thank everyone who attended,” he stated.

Among those present at the ceremony were Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang and Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong. — DayakDaily
