SIBU, Sept 14: Nine rookies from Sarawak are among the 33 jumpers who will leap off Wisma Sanyan at the Sibu International Base Jump 2022 with trial jumps starting today.

However, before the rookies are allowed to make their first jump from the 28-storey Wisma Sanyan, they need to undergo two days of ground training, according to their coach Mohd Idrus Yusof.

“They will make seven jumps altogether during the three-day event (Sept 15-17) before they can qualify as base jumpers,” said Idrus, a Malaysian coach from Kuala Lumpur.

Idrus prayed that the weather which has seen sporadic rain in recent days will be fine throughout the event.

“The weather is good but the wind speed must not be over 15 knots,” he said.

Sibu Resident Wong Hee Sieng who is also the Sibu Divisional Tourism Task Force chairman, said most of the event’s 33 participants are Malaysians with five from Australia and USA.

The event has been held from 2009 to 2019 and every year it attracts base jumpers from all over the world.

“I hope this event can help to boost Sibu’s economy, particularly the tourism industry, and help promote Sibu as a tourism destination,” he said.

A miring ceremony was held this morning at the Sibu Town Square grandstand for the success of the event.

The official flag-off ceremony will be officiated at by Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Art Minister, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at 8am on Sept 16. — DayakDaily
