MIRI, Jan 14: A local woman in Miri was scammed out of a staggering RM60,000 by a fraudster who enticed her with a bogus part-time job offer and investment opportunity.

Miri Police OCPD ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said police received a report on the case on January 12.

He said it all began when the victim, who is in her 40s and works in the private sector, received a text message which contained a link advertising a part-time job.

Intrigued, she clicked on the link, which linked her to an application called ‘Asia Shopping’ where she was promised lucrative commissions for every item purchased and sold.

Unfortunately, all the items turned out to be non-existent.

Initially, she did receive small payments for her purchases, amounting to RM5,000. However, the scammers swiftly shifted gears, introducing her to an investment opportunity they claimed would yield substantial profits.

Trusting the offer, the victim began investing more money and made 11 transactions amounting to RM60,000 to a bank account provided by the scammers.

She realised she was being scammed when she failed to receive the promised profit balance, prompting her to lodge a police report. — DayakDaily
