KUCHING, July 9: A retired private sector employee in his 60s from Miri has fallen victim to a sophisticated online investment scam, losing approximately RM435,000 after being lured into a fake stock trading scheme via Facebook.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata confirmed that a police report has been lodged by the victim, who was drawn into the scam in mid-May 2025 after encountering a Facebook advertisement promoting an investment opportunity.

“The ad was allegedly posted by an unidentified woman posing as the administrator of a WhatsApp group called ‘Aleesya Stock Trading’. Intrigued by the offer, the victim clicked on a link embedded in the advertisement and was subsequently added to the group.

“Over time, the victim has made several staged bank transfers amounting to about RM500,000 into an account provided by the suspect,” he said in a statement today.

The scam began to unravel when the suspect demanded more payments before any supposed profits could be withdrawn.

“To date, the victim has only received approximately RM65,000 in returns,” he added.

Police have urged the public to exercise caution when encountering investment opportunities on social media and to verify the authenticity of any financial schemes before committing funds. — DayakDaily
