MIRI, Dec 5: The Miri Port Authority (MPA) has marked a new milestone with the launch of its first shore power or cold ironing facility at the MPA Crew Change Terminal (MPACCT) in Pulau Melayu, a significant step toward cleaner and more sustainable port operations.

In a TVS news, MPA chairman Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang said the installation of the first shore power unit at Berth 5 is a strategic effort made possible through a collaboration between MPA and TotalEnergies EP Malaysia since May 2025.

“The objective of this initiative is clear: to reduce carbon emissions, fuel consumption, and noise pollution while vessels are berthed.

“As the first installation of its kind at MPACCT, this facility also aims to support cleaner day-to-day port operations, enhance workplace safety, and improve air quality for port users and the surrounding community,” he said in his speech which was delivered by MPA Board member Pandang Semat during the ceremony on Thursday (Dec 4).

He added that the facility will also benefit Miri’s maritime industry by providing better air quality, safer working conditions, and reducing wear and tear on vessel engines.

In addition, this technology enables vessels to draw electrical power directly from the terminal, improving air quality and ensuring a safer working environment.

MPA also plans to expand the use of shore power to all oil and gas berths at MPACCT, as well as general cargo berths in Kuala Baram, over the coming years.

This initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS 2030) target of reducing carbon emissions at port terminals by 25 per cent, and Malaysia’s aspiration to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

With this launch, MPA takes a major step toward establishing itself as a pioneer of green port development in Sarawak, while driving clean energy transformation in the maritime sector. — DayakDaily
